Ulrich Leo was born in Germany on May 8, 1890. The son of the great Latinist, Friedrich Leo, Ulrich studied the Classical languages, philology, and hermeneutics at Goettingen and Greifswald. After completing his studies in Germany he taught briefly at William Penn College in Iowa before going to the University of Toronto as professor of Romance literature.
